Power and the struggle to obtain power is a challenge that mankind deals with on a daily basis. Throughout the thousands of years since the invention of currency, those with more wealth are regarded as powerful by those with less wealth. Charles Dickens, a famous writer from the mid 19th century, used his literature to bring attention to the problems in the world around him, more specifically the problems in England. One of these problems was wealth and the class system, which Dickens not only illustrated in his writings, but used as a plot for two of his books. Great Expectations and Nicholas Nickleby both demonstrate that money leads to unhappiness. In some cases, money directly leads to unhappiness. The most commonly found example of money leading to unhappiness is debt. Great Expectations by Charles Dickens follows a boy named Pip throughout his life. As Pip ages, he inherits more and more wealth from a benefactor unbeknownst to him until he turns twenty three. Before he was twenty three however, Pip and his friend Herbert were sharing an apartment in London, trying to live like gentlemen. To match society’s description of gentlemen, Pip and Herbert had to live expensive lives. They bought expensive jewellery and clothing, and joined a gentlemen’s club known as the â€Å"Finches of the Grove.† By maximizing their expenditures without knowing when their next paycheck would arrive, Pip and Herbert accrued a large amount of debt.
